Slow Cooker Butter Chicken (Chicken Makhani)

Who doesn't like an Indian takeaway? Save your money and cook this Slow Cooker Butter Chicken (otherwise known as Chicken Makhani) recipe yourself, you'll be amazed at how flavoursome this is!

Ever get intimidated by the enormous ingredient lists attached to Indian recipes? Yeah, us too, and that's why we love this Slow Cooker Butter Chicken recipe so much. Butter Chicken is also known as Chicken Makhani, in case you were wondering.

It's made from ingredients you're likely to have in the cupboard, and the only difference between this and a "proper" takeaway is that this has a bucket-load less fat in it (and it's cheaper..)!

Ingredients

  • 4 skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 2 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp tumeric
  • 0.5 tsp ground ginger (or finely chopped fresh ginger if you have it)
  • 2 tsp sugar (any type will do)
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 150g tomato puree (a small can or most of a normal tube)
  • 125ml plain yoghurt
  • 250ml coconut milk
  • Chopped coriander, to serve
  • Salt and pepper to season

Method

  1. In a little oil over a medium heat, seal the chicken and transfer to the slow cooker. In the same oil, fry the onions until translucent, and add the crushed garlic, cooking for another minute. Add the onions and garlic to the chicken that's already in the slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the garam masala, tumeric, curry powder, ginger, sugar and salt. In the same bowl, mix in the tomato puree, followed by the yoghurt and coconut milk.
  3. Pour the spice mixture over the chicken and onions in the slow cooker, and give it a good stir.
  4. Cook on low for up to six hours. Once cooked, season with a good crack of salt pepper. Serve with plenty of chopped coriander.

    Adore this dish - really tasty and lots of flavour. For me, the Chicken Tikka Masala wins on pure depth of flavour but do try this as well as it is too good to be ignored :-) Thanks for helping me to love my slow cooker again x

    I have now cooked this 3 times and each time it came out really delicious. Even my daughter eats it and she doesn't usually like curries. I added a bit of cream at the end just before serving and everybody loved it. I'm sure I'll be cooking this again very soon. Thanks for all the recipes. I look forward to trying a few more.

    AWESOME! Easy and quick to prepare, full of flavour, just the right amount of heat (I used medium curry powder and homemade garam masala!) and not a hint of an oil slick on the top like you get with takeaways! Absolutely incredible....if your slow cooker is gathering dust, give it a clean and cook this. It will remind you why you bought it!
